Helping Monarch Butterflies: A Personal Journey of Conservation
Jan 30, 2025 09:31AM ● By Heather Mulhollan
With determination and a deep sense of purpose, I began researching how I could make a difference. This led to the creation of the Monarch Butterfly Conservation Program through my business, Fairhaven Healing.
The goal of this program is simple but powerful: to teach people how they can help save Monarch butterflies in their own backyards.
The Mission of Fairhaven Healing’s Monarch Conservation Program
At the core of the program are two primary pillars: education and direct action.
- Education: I believe that knowledge is the key to making real change. Through my program, I offer two essential classes:
- Saving
the Monarchs: This
class covers the critical role Monarchs play in our environment, the
challenges they face, and how each of us can make a difference.
- Raising the Monarchs: In this class, I teach people how to raise Monarch butterflies in their own homes, providing a safe environment to nurture and release these incredible creatures into the wild.
- Raising Monarchs: Beyond teaching, I also raise Monarchs myself. I’ve created a unique rearing program that allows these butterflies to be exposed to the wild while still being protected from predators. So far, I’ve successfully released over 300 healthy Monarch butterflies back into their natural habitat.
The Special Connection: Naming Monarchs in Honor of Loved Ones
One thing I quickly realized is that people connect more deeply to an animal
when they can see it in person and feel a personal bond. Monarchs, like many
other winged creatures such as Cardinals and Dragonflies, are often seen as
messengers from heaven. With this in mind, I created a special Monarch
Naming Program. Every Monarch butterfly I release is named in honor of
someone who has passed away.
Anyone can participate by submitting the name of your loved one, which is then entered into a raffle. Each time a butterfly is released, I randomly draw a name and send you photos and videos of the butterfly that was named in honor of your loved one. These images and videos are also shared on Fairhaven Healing’s social media pages, allowing a larger community to witness the beauty of the release.
To submit a name or learn more about the Monarch Naming Program, visit Fairhaven Healing’s website at fairhaven-healing.com and select the Monarch Butterfly Conservation tab.
